    Resealing Alpha Upper

It seems the correct torque is 85 ft lbs. That seems high. That's what I will do unless someone has a reason to say otherwise. Let me know!

    Resealing Alpha Upper

That video from Ted's Marine Repair discusses differences between Alpha 1, Gen 2 drives. The one I am working on is the original "Alpha."

    Resealing Alpha Upper

I have service manual 14 - and unless I missed it, it only references the newer models with the pressed on bearing and rolling torque figures. It does appear that the unit I am working on is the older style with the slip bearings and spacer. Now I need to find the actual torque value of the nut.

    Resealing Alpha Upper

Had to take some time off of this project, but now am back at it. I was prepared to check the rolling torque on this reseal, but I think I have an older Alpha that is simply torqued down. Is there a way to know for sure. Check out the video. Question - rolling torque, or simply torque the...

    Resealing Alpha Upper

A pretty big difference. You can buy an aftermarket yoke for around $80 or so. The speedi-sleeve was only $30. And yes - the shorter sleeve will be wide enough. It is part # 99227 for anyone looking at this in future.

    Resealing Alpha Upper

Thanks - yes the lower driven gear area looks brand new. I will be replacing both lower seals as well. They came in the reseal kit. But they actually appear to be in good shape.

looking for recommendations for gimbal bearing puller

Autozone has a great free tool rental program for these kind of tools that you do not use very often. They have a slide hammer and then the rear axel bearing puller attachment that you use together. Free loaner tool. That's what I always use.

    Resealing Alpha Upper

Just to follow up - in doing a little more research, I see part #99227 has the same diameter, but is only .43 wide in total, but only .31 inches "shaft length." For that one, I don't know if it will be wide enough....

    Resealing Alpha Upper

Hello fellow gear heads! Long time since I have posted on here. I am currently helping my son-in-law with his boat. He has an Alpha outdrive that is leaking out of the upper drive area. I will be replacing the seals. I cleaned up the yoke, and it appears to have a groove that is a bit too...

Shifting Issue alpha 1 Gen 1

I got rid of my boat with the Mercruiser - now have a Hurricane deck boat with a Yamaha outboard... but I will check in to this forum from time to time being the old timer that I am. ;-)

Shifting Issue alpha 1 Gen 1

A common mistake is to leave out the stainless steel washer that sits on top of the shift shaft. Without the washer in place the intermediate shaft does not go high enough to engage with the upper shift shaft. Just something to check and make sure it is in place.

Rebuilding raw water pump 1990 230A

Hello all. I am in the process of rebuilding the raw water pump on my 1990 Vovlo Penta 230A (similar to the AQ131). The rear seal is leaking and I have purchase a kit which includes pretty much everything, including the shaft and new bushings. I have a press and can press out the bushing on...

Help with lower shift shaft bushing - Alpha

Long story short... I replaced the impeller in my Alpha outdrive (1st gen). The gear oil looked fine - a little dark, but no water in the oil. After replacing the impeller I put everything back together and pressure tested it. Would not hold pressure. Sprayed the various shafts with soapy...

replacing the lower two anode bolts on Mercruiser transom assembly

I am replacing the two lower anode bolts on the transom assembly of my 86 Welcraft with an Alpha drive. (They are pretty corroded up). My question concerns the two rubber washers. Do they go between the bolt and the transom assembly? That would make sense... but they would need to really...
