I would isolate the points .....remove all wires to the points and then connect one probe of your meter to one side of the points and other meter probe to the other side of the points , set meter to ohms and rotate whatever you have to to make the points open and close . When points are open you...
Wel I had a bit of a measure up of my other spinning reels , not all of them but the ratio of spool size to the distance from the roller axis centre line to where the line touches the spool at a tangent is about the same .

The spool is def not over full ...now as I have lost about 50m of line offa it in the last couple of days and I think it only held about 100m .
This is probly a long shot but some of those under flywheel ignitions rely on the locating of the flywheel on the crankshaft to be spot on , and if I am understanding you the flywheel key has some slop so its no locating the flywheel precisely on the crankshaft.

Well I had another look at supermarket and one frozen ,about 10" long vacuum sealed was 12 bucks and I couldnt see and no one could tell me if it was gutted or gilled or even scaled so I left it there.
I think that....... The drag knob sides are cylindrical and as I cast the line the braid prescribes an acr and when I wind as the bail arm goes over there is enough slack line to allow the 1st loop to wind around the knob ...if I had noticed at this point I could save it but......so it winds...
