ok i have resolved the spark problem on the motor it will fire right up on the turn of the key now the motor will not idle soon as it turns over it will run for about 10 seconds then die down. Will start right back up and do the same. If i try to give it gas it will stall right out do any of you have any ideas for where i should start to look

Have you touched the carbs, have you verified choke operation, the are opening back up once you let off?

You need to go through you carbs, the only time they should leak is when the choke is held too long. Probably hung up floats or bad needle and seat. Bank about 3-4 hours and $25 per kit, let the fun begin. When I got my pretty 1000 back from install it's the first thing I did, the bottom carb was leaking like a sieve.

That motor has the choke shutters, so the carbs should never flood, unless something is wrong with the floats, inlet needle and seat or both. I recommend you clean and rebuild the carbs with new gasket sets. Check the floats. The original floats were foam and can disolve. Replacements are hard plastic and can crack. Inlet needles wear out and can be damaged by ethanol. Initial carb setting is 1 -1/2 turnsout from lightly seated.

Not normally BUT if you crank while holding the choke button they will load up and leak fuel. All they need for starting is a quick tap or 2 of the choke and they will fire without leaking gas.

Thunderbolt, Many places online carry carb kits, floats and inlet needles and seats. Likely iboats, but I know ebasicpower.com carries them. There are sierra, mallory and OEM kits avail.

BK - I had a '77 Merc IL6 for 25 years. To cold start that motor, I always needed to hold the choke closed, cold start lever up, and crank her until she started. "A quick tap or Two" will do nothing to choke that motor. Also holding the choke closed while cranking will not flood that motor.
