I have an 88 8hp motor with a broken swivel bracket. E8RLCCS. Before I try to get the old one out I was wondering how difficult this job will be? does the lower unit need to be removed?any advice would be appreciated. I ordered a manual today but the sun is finally shining and I want to start on it......thanks

Re: 88 8hp Swivel Bracket replacement

The diagram HERE taken from the BRP Parts website Shows all the bits and pieces except the shift rod which passes through the centre of the the steering bracket #39 and the swivel bracket #34.
It locates at the top in the pinion #101 and passes through grommet #102 and the hole in the lower part of the exhaust housing #1 on its way to the gearcase where it is retained by a clip.

This means, I think you will find, that the gearcase has to be removed complete with shift rod! The rod just pulls out of pinion at the top, the driveshaft pulls out of the crankshaft and the water tube pulls out of the grommet in the top of the waterpump. A bit of a fiddle getting them all back together but not difficult.

Now is the time, while the lower unit is off, to replace the water-pump impeller and the gearcase seals if necessary.
