89 9.9 Evinrude kicks out of gear

This started happening after hit some junk in the water. It seems to happen when I go into high speed and it is not always popping out. When it does I just throttle down and put it in neutral and shove it back into gear and away we go. Do you think something could have happened to the clutch dog? I am awaiting answers before I start to tear it down. Thanks for any help.

Any metal in the lower unit oil? Sounds like your thoughts on the shift dog might be correct. You will probably have to tear it down to be sure.
