I have an '89 evinrude 90hp that is running extremely rich at low speeds. When I open up the carbs with the engine running it is slow to get up to speed and it gets real smokey. The fuel mixture is about 50:1 but I don't know weather the oil to gas mixture is too high or if the carbs are spitting too much gas. One thing I notice is when I pump the primer ball, gas leaks out of the carbs which does not make sense to me because the float valves should be shut by thenow.

My question is what is my next step?

Should I tear the carbs apart and mess with float valves (which to be honest Im not really sure how to adjust them)

Can adjusting the float valves make my engine run less rich at low speeds.

Should I dump more gas into the tank to make my gas/oil ratio higher?

What is my next step?

Doing the float valves is easy.-----Hold the carburetor upside down and level and the float should be level.------But given the history of these motors you would be wise to do compression test first.---Not sure why you would contemplate changing your mixture !

50:1 is the correct fuel mix if you are running premix, not VRO.

The carb should not leak fuel when the primer ball is pumped.
Your carbs are flooding because the floats and needle valves are not controlling the fuel flow properly.

The floats may be sticking, the needle valves may not be closing properly due to debris on the seats or worn needles or the float level may be incorrect.
