This is a mercury tilt kill switch for my Mercury Thunderbolt ignition 500 50 h.p. circa 1976.... I need to buy a new one...

I would query eBay for parts for that motor, be it stator, magneto, or whatever. Use the query to track down one of the boat motor graveyards around the country.

Does it make or break when it's tilted? Thought is that a more modern tilt switch could be made to work. V6 merc, for instance, has one that shorts when tilted. Then again, it could be mounted at a different angle.

If you have any kind of scrapyard in your area where they dispose of metal, old outboards, etc, you can find one of these on many of the old Mercs you come across.

Failing that, note your motor's Ser. # and look up the part number here:

Note this part is NLA (No Longer Available). However, your local Merc dlr might have some old stock left on the shelf; likely a very slow-moving part.
