Groove on Input Shaft Stopping from Passing through Gimbal

Hi,
Trying to re-install my drive after changing the gimbal and it has been a nightmare. The alignment tool goes in easily, spline marks are even around it.

When sliding the bearing over the shaft with the drive off the boat, unless I hold the bearing perfectly square, it seems to catch on this groove (see picture). I don't know why this groove is there. The older bearing was actually in fantastic condition.

I have the manual, using oil on o-rings, minimal grease on shaft, correct bearing (Volvo 21752712 which I learned upon opening it is greasable... I was expecting sealed).

I'm really at a loss. I can get the splines to just start engaging the coupler (the studs are just at the beginning of the holes) but no further. Based on measurements at this point the larger tapered part of the shaft should start passing through the gimbal bearing but I believe it is getting hung on that groove. 100% square seems impossible since I cannot get anything in there to level the u-joints.

Anyone have any ideas or tips? I spent 6 hours today trying it over and over... took bearing out, reseated etc.

I would try using a file to take off any protrusions from the groove. Otherwise get a new input shaft.
