The ones I remember had a 6-71 Detroit coupled to a stern drive. 2 of them could actually plane off a barge. Most times they were welded on. Usually they would power a barge with supplies and then swapped over to an empty barge to return on. I knew a guy who was involved doing that.
I was in the Mekong in 69 on LST#1123 and saw them often.
