I have a 70 HP, 1983 Evinrude, trying to remove the lower unit

I have removed all 6 bolts and the F/R shift pin under the carbs. I can see light thru the foot & twist slightly side-to-side, but the driveshaft is stuck. Too big to turn upside-down and hit with liquid wrench, any suggestions/help?

Re: Lower unit removal-Need help w/Driveshaft

Welcome Tradewinds!

This problem comes along every so often. Have you tried putting a "pry" between the lower unit and midsection? Sometimes getting a little rough will help.....meaning....pry the crap outta it.

One of two things is probably happening....the splines are gaulded or the splines on the drive shaft have worn and sorta locked in by the splines in the crankshaft.

Gaulded splines are the worst....getting some kind of penetrating oil in there would be good....but as you said...difficult.

If the splines are worn....get the lower unit in gear. Hold the prop shaft from turning and work the flywheel COUNTER clockwise while prying down on the lower unit.

Most times....harsh language helps the most.

Re: Lower unit removal-Need help w/Driveshaft

Thanks for the reply. In the manual, the foot comes off after 6 bolts and a pin.

I've done a bit of prying, left a few battle-scars already. The force required to pry at this point is damaging the aluminum. My wife is now laughing at me as I beat the hell out of it with a rubber mallet.

I am not familiar with a term you used..."gaulded". What does this mean? I do understand what you mean by holding the prop in gear and working the flywheel. This would basically twist the entire drivetrain, and connection points would move if possible, however slightly.

This motor is ancient, used exclusively in salt. The lower unit has never been removed. I wash thoroughly after every use, but I would think the connection is just corroded. Is everything stainless in the driveline?

Also, what about using heat? I think I can see the connection point between the crank and drive (just below the motor). I have a small propane torch that can be aimed right at the point.

Any advice will be appreciated.

John
