Merc 2.5 200 hp no charge

I have a 93 merc 200 hp that is not charging after my son connected one of the batterys in reverse polarity and tryed to start but had enough sense to turn off battery switch when battery box started smoking after 10 seconds or so cranking. I recharged the batterys and are 100% fully charged and load tested o-k. I need help, is there away to test the regulators and stator. The engine runs fine and no signs of any damage other then not charging i don't want to just go out and play the guessing game.

There is a 99.9% chance he blew the diodes in the rectifier. Your manual will give you testing instructions.
