Engine is Salt Water Only never flushed due to location. It has done 320 hours in 6 years and always been winterised and serviced. Nothing wrong on last outing hits 4800 rpm and 52mph (19ft Regal LSR). Starts fine etc. I have removed it from the boat due to things rusting with the aim to give it an overhaul. I intend to

1) Replace the exhaust manifolds and risers and check valves.
2) Renew any electrical cables / connectors that show signs of corrosion. Ensure that all connections are good and rust free then coat with liquid tape (Like Neoprene dip).
3) Replace front engine mounts due to corroded nuts, no adjustment possible.
4) Paint the engine.
5) Replace Starter motor (Old solenoid failed , unit rusty).

I have already replaced the impellor , belts , rotor , dist cap , ignition leads, coil and shift cable last year. What else should I be looking at doing? What is sensible to do on an engine this old?

Any tips appreciated.

Regards

Chris
P.S Thanks for the help on the engine removal thread it all worked!

320 hours is no reason to overhaul. If the oil pressure is good and it runs like it should, do the maintainance you mentioned and reinstall it. That engine, if serviced regularly, should be good for another 1200+ hours.

I'm not sure you need an overhaul. To me an overhaul is complete engine dissassembly, new main and cam bearings, rings, honed/ or bored cylinders (pistons if bored) possibly turned crank, complete valve grind etc.
Without doing a compression check and a leakdown test to verify the condition of the engine and from your discription of how it runs, WHY? It's not OLD, and 320 hours on a 6 year old engine is minimal.
Fix the corroded things and run it.

Ayuh,....... I Agree with the above posts,.......

You Might want to Closely Inspect the Tin Work,...
aka, the Oil Pan,+ Timing Cover for potential Rust Out Problems......

Thank you for the comments, corrosion is the only known problem particularly the paint has come off the oil pan. I shall sort the corrosion and leave well alone.

Many thanks all for the advice.

That oil pan is a cast aluminum pan, so make sure you get all the corrosion off before you paint it. The pan costs over $250 US so you don't want it going bad on you. Even if you take it off and get the outside sand blasted it would be a good idea. New gasket is only about 20 bucks US. Just make sure you REALLY clean the inside out before reinstalling if you get it blasted.
The timing chain cover on your engine is plastic, so no worry with corrosion there.
Make sure your pulleys on the front of the engine are cleaned and painted also.

Don,

Thanks for the tip about the pan. I didnt realise it was aluminium, that will explain the lack of rust and why the paint has peeled off in huge chunks. Its also means a different priming method. So it will definately come off and be sprayed separately.

Really enjoying doing this, I just hope it all goes back together again. :)

Many Thanks
Chris
