I identified my outboard as a '46 to '50 HD25, now what should I do before trying to start it up? I have no idea how long it has be sitting.
Where can I find parts to repair it?
Where can I buy parts and service books on it?

It might be a good idea to read the "Top Secret File" at the top of the page.
I don't know of any online parts books for an engine that old.
There are some antique clubs that might be able to help with parts, I am sure someone will come along with some sites for you.

Parts can be obtained at Sea-Way Marine, up in Seattle. I just bought a bunch of stuff to restore my 1941 HD-20

If you post the serial number we can pinpoint a year for you.

The Johnson H or T series motors may be a bit different from what you are used to.

Start by testing the compression, if the powerhead is ok, you can start with your tuneup.

Start by testing spark. If she is sparking great, you are lucky. Chances are you will have no spark. Points will need to be cleaned/re gapped and the coils inspected. If they are cracked dont bother testing them, they are no good and will need to be replaced. If they look new test the primary and secondary windings. Gap the points to 020 after dressing with a points file, then clean with acetone or the like. If the plug leads are cracked/rotted they will need to be replaced with new solid core plug wire. Plugs are Champion J6J gapped to 030. Here is a good link for testing the ignition system.

You will then need to go over the fuel system. Ensure the tank is free from rust/varnish. May need a cleaning before proceeding. Pull the carb and thoroughally clean/rebuild it. Here is a great link to aid in this.

It is now time to replace both the gear oil and water pump. Drain the oil before removing the gearcase, then replace after re installing with new drain/vent gaskets. Let us know if you need help with any of this. You likely will your first time.

Thanks Chris, all great information. I spent some time in the Top Secret File but I need to spend a lot more. I'm used to working on Ford Flathead V8s so this is a whole lot different.
I am really excited about this little motor and can't wait to hear run.
